' 2012 Zinfandel (Crimson Hill Vineyard) - Gregory Graham Wines

2012 Zinfandel (Crimson Hill Vineyard)

Zinfandel is the most versatile grape variety grown in California, and is likely the variety that is best suited for our Northern California climate where it allows each producer to craft his or hers own unique style. Gregory Graham has chosen a riper style with concentrated fruit. The wine is harvested at high brix (sugar content) to produce a stand-alone wine that would be diminished with blending.

This wine is grown, produced and bottled at our estate winery in the Red Hills district of Lake County. The vineyard and winery are at 2,000 feet elevation and overlook the southern end of Clear Lake. The seven-acre vineyard block is planted in well-drained, sloped, crimson red, volcanic soil that provides the perfect site for growing great red wines. The climate is ideal for mid- to late season reds. The vineyard receives daily full sun with warm temperatures in the spring and summer that are tempered by daily afternoon mistrals.

The grapes are gently de-stemmed and cold-soaked for three days. Fermentation is in small open-top fermenters where the must is punched down twice daily until fermentation subsided. The new wine is then aged in French oak barrels and blended with 5% Petite Sirah from the neighboring Vigilance (formerly Rolling Knolls) vineyard.
